Paddle sports are managed by the British Canoe Union (BCU) who maintain a scheme of leadership awards that are the industry standard. They also have a scheme to recognise training establishments.

Providers on all but very sheltered water are required to hold an Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) licence and this requires, in amongst its requirements for safe systems of work, an experienced person to guide other staff so that they remain within limitations. Generally this will be a person who holds the Level 3 Coach Award or higher in appropriate activities.
