Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2001 (REPPIR)

REPPIR establishes a framework from which to protect the public from radiation accidents. The Regulations state that information must be given to the public in advance of an incident and also in the event of any kind of radiation emergency.

There are various activities carried out within the Devonport Royal Dockyard site, but there is only one that could result in a 'radiation emergency' and that is a nuclear emergency. The design of nuclear submarines means that an accident involving a submarine nuclear reactor is very unlikely. There is absolutely no risk of an 'atom bomb' type explosion.

REPPIR requires the Ministry of Defence and Babcock Marine Ltd, as the on-site operators for Devonport Royal Dockyard, to have an emergency plan in place to deal with any reasonably foreseeable radiation emergency. The plan must include all of the operator's actions and fit into the off-site emergency plan.

If you live within the Devonport area and would like to register to receive emergency notification messages please visit our Warn and Inform page.
