Energy supply

We take our energy for granted. The energy we use to switch on a light, or fry our bacon comes from a variety of different sources. As resources dwindle and we become reliant on importing energy (particularly gas) the security of the supply becomes increasingly important. The more energy we can generate nationally and locally the better the security of supply becomes.

Current provision

Currently most of our electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels - either coal (32 per cent) or gas (45 per cent). Although the government is aiming to reduce this dependency by 2020 we will still be heavily reliant on fossil fuels for our electricity (over 50 per cent).

Sustainability of fuels

Fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) are all limited in number. Not only that but when they are burnt to generate electricity they release tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This contributes to climate change. It is very important to consider how sustainable fuels are, and to try and become more reliant on renewable and sustainable sources of energy.

What can you do?

Several electricity companies offer 'green tariffs'. This is where a set amount of the electricity you buy is from a renewable source, or is deemed carbon neutral because the company 'offsets' its carbon emissions. For more information on switching supply see our affordable warmth page.

Consider installing a wood burning stove. Wood can be a very sustainable material and there is nothing quite like sitting down in front of a real fire.
