Examples of alternative solutions

The school should try one or more alternative solutions before exclusion is used, for example:

• restorative justice - giving the pupil a chance to put right any harm done
• mediation - a person helps sort out any conflict between your child and any other pupils or a teacher
• internal exclusion (also know as internal seclusion) to somewhere else within the school with appropriate support, or moving to another class on a temporary basis. Internal exclusion may continue during break periods
• a managed move to another school with the full knowledge and co-operation of the parents and the Local Authority (LA), and where it is in the best interest of the pupil concerned
• a trial placement at another school
• work with the Behaviour Support Team/or Inclusion Practitioners (primary schools)
• inclusion packages through the Alternative Complimentary Education (ACE) centres

Parents can seek advice from the Parent Partnership Service or the LA before withdrawing their child from school.
