We encourage everyone who is entitled to benefits to apply for them whilst at the same time taking action against those who defraud the system.
Benefit fraud is often thought of as a 'victimless crime', but this is not true. In 2007 to 2008 benefit thieves stole an estimated £800 million from public funds.
We have a commitment to detecting and preventing benefit fraud. We have a dedicated fraud team who undertake investigations into allegations of benefit fraud which are received from members of the public, officers of the Council and other Government departments, and from the results of national and local data matching.
