School organisation
The City Council is the main provider of school places in Plymouth and like all Local Authorities, has a statutory duty to ensure that sufficient school places are available now and in the future.
The School Implementation Plan 2005 to 2015 is the City Council's 10-year blueprint for the provision of school places.
We have recently consulted all interested parties on:
- Relocating Downham Special School to Tor Bridge in September 2012.
- Removing boarding provision from Downham Special School and replacing it with a stand alone short break Residential Unit at Downham House, to coincide with the relocation to Tor Bridge in September 2012.
A number of school reorganisation projects have been implemented in the last few years, these are:
2005
- New all-through primary school in Ernesettle to replace Ernesettle infant and junior schools
- New all-through primary school in Beacon Park to replace Montpelier infant and junior schools
2007
- New all-through primary school in Chaddlewood to replace Chaddlewood Infant and Junior Schools
2008
- New schools on a single site for the Wood View Learning Community federation in Whitleigh - Sir John Hunt Community Sports College, Whitleigh Primary School and Woodlands Special School
- Two new primary schools for the Southernway Federation in Southway to replace Southway and Tamerton Vale Primary Schools, and Langley Infant and Junior Schools - Beechwood and Oakwood Primary Schools
- New primary school in Barne Barton to replace Barne Barton and Bull Point Primary Schools - Riverside Primary School
- New all-through primary school at Salisbury Road to replace Salisbury Road Infant and Junior Schools
2009
- New primary school in Ham Drive to replace North Prospect and South Trelawny Primary Schools - Mayflower Primary School
- New primary school in Honicknowle to replace Chaucer and West Park Primary Schools - Shakespeare Primary School
- New primary school in Efford to replace Highfield and Plym View Primary Schools - High View School
- Changing the designation of Courtlands and Longcause Special Schools and Brook Green Centre for Learning with effect from June 2009
2010
- New all-through primary school in Woodford (Plympton) to replace Woodford Infant and Junior Schools
- Extending the age range and changing the designation of Woodlands Community Special School, part of the Wood View Learning Community
- Changing the age range to include post 16 provision at Sir John Hunt Community Sports College, part of the Wood View Learning Community
- The discontinuation of Tamarside Community College and John Kitto Community College and the opening of Marine Academy Plymouth and All Saints Academy Plymouth
2011
- Extending the age range of Downham Special School
- The discontinuation of the Plymouth Hospital and Outreach School, replacing it with a support service managed as part of the Alternative Complementary Education (ACE) service.
Essential elements in school place planning are pupil number forecasts and school capacity assessments. The City Council undertakes this work on behalf of all schools and other professional stakeholders in Plymouth.
