Horse riding and/or pony trekking

The British Horse Society provides a register of approved centres and a list of registered instructors who have signed up and are therefore subject to their code of conduct.

Minimum standards are also determined by the Riding for the Disabled Association with information on their website. This will help to ensure that providers are able to meet the local authority's licence requirements for pony trekking providers and to ensure the horse care buildings and insurance are up to the required standard.

Preparation, particularly to encourage the use of appropriate clothing including waterproofs, is essential to the enjoyment and learning that riding offers, particularly in the colder months and while in exposed terrain. Good riding schools will offer advice on clothing that works well for riding or trekking on the moors.

Careful planning and briefing is required when for some training or competitive events the support and cooperation of parents is essential. In such circumstances, it is essential that school staff clarify at what times and for what activities they take on the responsibility making it clear when parents take this over.

Event organisers have a responsibility to ensure that any safety equipment that is required to undertake their activity is clearly identified and a supervising adult is often required to ensure that this is available and used correctly.
