School supervised medication

There is no legal duty which requires school staff to administer medication. This is a voluntary role. However head teachers and teachers are expected to use their best endeavours at all times, and particularly in emergencies. A duty of care exists to all pupils.

Information regarding a school’s policy on the administration of medication to pupils will be issued by the individual school and parents or carers who have a child who requires medication during the school day are encouraged to discuss the matter with the school at the earliest opportunity and no later than when the medication is to be first administered.
