There are local qualifications and endorsements as well as national schemes which are often perfectly adequate and supported by national bodies.

It is the view of the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority that any competence must have been subjected to some measure of formal assessment.

The management arrangements must be based on a thorough risk assessment and to some degree measured against other available guidance.
