Perceptions of safety

In our Place Survey we ask people how safe they feel outside on the street. The latest survey was carried out in 2009 and we have only limited information from 2006 with which to monitor this target.

Green Circle Core Strategy Target 15.1

A reduction in the percentage of Plymouth’s residents and visitors who feel unsafe outside on the streets by day or night.

This target is on track.

How safe people feel at night depends on their age and where they live. Young people between the age of 18 and 24 are least likely to feel safe after dark (35 per cent), followed by those 75+ (46 per cent). Those between the age of 35 and 54 were the most likely to feel safe (51 per cent).

Residents in the North West (41 per cent), South West (40 per cent), and South East (39 per cent) localities were significantly less likely to say they feel safe at night. This compares to those from Central & North East (55 per cent), Plymstock (56 per cent) and Plympton (61 per cent).
