Plymouth Archaeology produces two series of publications. The Occasional Publications provide in depth coverage of individual archaeological sites, projects or events, while the guide books offer concise information about individual locations or areas within the city.

A number of limestone caves in the Plymouth district contain evidence of the earliest human occupation of South West England. Human remains recovered from five caves may date to the Upper Pleistocene, and flint artefacts were found at two. This publication provides an historical and geological background, a catalogue of 40 sites, and faunal lists of over 1000 identified specimens from the eight institutions known to be holding material from Plymouth.

An annual Archaeological Symposium has been held in Plymouth since 1993, with the aim of presenting the results of recent archaeological work to as wide a public as possible. The eight papers in this volume were originally presented at the first symposium, and include a review of Plymouth's historic fortifications, a synthesis of historical research and archaeological investigations of the medieval port, the results of excavations at the site of Plymouth's Carmelite Friary, and an account of efforts to study and preserve 2nd World War air raid shelters.

This study to identify the archaeological potential of the Sound and its adjacent waters was commissioned in 1994. At the heart of the volume is a period summary of the archaeology of the marine and coastal areas, which includes a substantial amount of new and previously unpublished material. It also includes a summary of what is presently understood about the cumulative process of coastal change locally, information bearing on future management, and identifies research priorities.

The Plymouth Development Corporation was established in 1993 to regenerate three important waterfront sites previously under the control of the Ministry of Defence. A series of extensive archaeological and historical investigations and recording programmes took place in conjunction with the regeneration works at Mount Wise, Stonehouse and Mount Batten. This publication presents the results of these projects and is the first full publication of archaeological excavation to modern standards for Plymouth.
