Project Space 11

Project Space 11 is an artist-led initiative situated in the heart of Plymouth City Market, supported by Plymouth City Council, Arts Council England and Plymouth College of Art.

The setting of a traditional indoor market, a microcosm of Plymouth culture and unique in its architecture, creates an exciting arena for visual art.

Coordinated by five Plymouth based artists, Project Space 11 strives to critically engage with artist-led practice regionally, nationally and potentially internationally; creating a platform for artist activity in the city.

The programme intends to be larger than its physical home; a small market place unit, operating as a Hub for artist led activity, with a rolling programme of events, exhibitions and happenings. Alongside this will be regular opportunities for artist networking, critical discourse and discussion.

Project Space 11 is run by five directors: Lucy Brennan, Scott Daniels, Bryony Gillard, Ben Langworthy and Beth Emily Richards. We are all emerging artists based in Plymouth.

Lucy Brennan

Lucy Brennan is an artist, print designer and illustrator; her real passion is drawing which is based on very British themes. Currently trying to make her mark in Plymouth, she has started drawing her home town. Instead of joining the seascape gang and painting only the obviously beautiful areas of Plymouth, she decided to focus on inner city scenes. Lucy Brennan website.

Scott Daniels

His interactive and participatory artworks are built around concerns with Social Interaction and Relational Aesthetics. Viewers become participants, inheriting a sense of shared ‘responsibility’ for the shaping of the resultant artwork. Scott Daniels website.

Bryony Gillard

Situated somewhere between sculpture and performance, her practice draws upon common social forms of interaction, in particular, celebrations, sports and games, Exploring the role of social archetypes in these situations. Often working in collaboration with artists or with social groups, physical participation is integral to her work. Bryony Gillard website.

Ben Langworthy

Using strategies of performance, intervention, and interaction, his practice explores ideas of myth, communication and odyssey within the ordinary and familiar. Simplicity and subtlety are implicit elements in his work, staging often futile or absurd scenarios or actions. Ben Langworthy website.

Beth Emily Richards

Explores notions of the performer, macho and the absurd through her performative practice. Her work also addresses the veracity of the archive, particularly the role of lens-based media and documentation in live artworks. She is a PVAC artist associate, and runs anart theory reading group, Salon South West, with Bryony Gillard. Beth Emily website.
