Home and community

Documents, images and film clips from the city's heritage services can show us hidden glimpses into the homes and communities of Plymouth and Plymouthians. How we lived in the past, how the sea has shaped the communities we work and live within, how those communities have changed over time, are themes can be explored through the resources presented here.

Narrow, cobbled streets meandering through the Barbican, dependable Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing, forming proud ranks marching across the city and post-war housing developments moving and growing the city and communities northwards – the green and blue city of Plymouth has a rich and rewarding heritage that is unique to the area.

All aspects of life are represented, work and play, houses and homes, school and study, the sea and the city.
