Involving people with learning disabilities

As part of making democracy more accessible, in 2009 Plymouth City Council launched an initiative to make sure that everyone has the ability to register and vote.

One of the most neglected groups of people in terms of voting is people with learning disabilities, who may be missing the opportunity to vote. The main reason for this is usually non inclusion in the electoral register and not understanding the voting process.

The Electoral Services Manager says: "Voting is very important and everyone should have the opportunity to participate in the local community by having the ability to register and vote at elections. To help with the electoral processes we have produced a booklet aimed at encouraging people with learning disabilities to participate in the democratic process".
