Care homes

Often a move into a care home is suggested because of an illness or a fall - but it is not always the only solution.

There are other options you can consider. Sheltered housing or extra care housing may be an option or you may prefer to get help to stay within your own home - you can do this by asking for an assessment through the adult social care service.

It is also possible to have a short stay in a care home for a trial period or get respite care to give you or your carers a break.

When choosing a home, it is important to make sure that you choose one that will be right for you now and in the future. You can get advice and information to help you make this important decision from:

What kind of care do you need?

Care homes have to make it very clear what level of care they provide and how they will meet each resident’s needs. All care homes should be able to give you help with personal care if you need it - this could include washing, dressing and going to the toilet.

If you are unable to leave the bed, or have a medical condition or illness that requires frequent medical attention, you may possibly need to look for a care home that provides nursing care. This type of home should have a qualified nurse on duty 24 hours a day.
