Some schools provide sailing for their pupils through organisations that are affiliated to the The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) such as the National Schools Sailing Association (NSSA) and in these circumstances school staff would be required to hold the same qualifications as those of any Recognised Teaching Establishment Scheme (RTE) staff.
School managers must be confident that a partnership has clear operational procedures and that leadership certificates and first aid certificates are confirmed by copies held on file. These records should also highlight when revalidations are required and achieved.
Any school contemplating developing sailing activities is recommended to seek the advice of the Outdoor Education Adviser who can provide an overview of the local facilities and potential sources of support.
Where sailing activities are concerned, it is normal practice to refer weather and water conditions to a more experienced member of staff, normally a senior instructor, who can then make any changes to operations or postpone an activity until there is an improvement in conditions.
