Ham Woods

Ham Woods

Ham Woods is a large, natural wooded area just south of the Parkway, near Ham and Pennycross. It covers over 35 hectares - that's about 35 full sized football pitches!

Sited on a steep valley, it is a lovely place to see nature with woodland, grasses and a stream called Ham Brook. It supports at least 21 species of butterfly and, over the years more than 80 species of birds have been seen or heard with more than half being regular visitors or residents.

Local people have told us that they would use Ham Woods more if it felt safer and cleaner. They would like to see it tidied up with improved paths and more opportunities for positive activities.

Over the last six months, the Stepping Stones Team has been talking with residents, young people, schools and local service providers to get their ideas for improvements and organising fun nature based activities in the woods.

Groundwork Green Team has been working over the summer to help clear rubbish and fly-tipping, making the woods a more pleasant space to enjoy. The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) now has a team of young people working in Ham Woods, starting to remove invasive species and clear paths.
