The Place Survey

What is it?

The Place Survey was developed by the government department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to find out what local people think about certain key services run by local councils and their partners. It replaces the General Satisfaction Survey (or BVPI Survey) which last took place in 2006.

From 2008, we are required to carry out the survey every two years. The results of Plymouth's first Place Survey are available below:

If you would like a copy of this report in another format, please let us know.

What does it cover?

The Place Survey includes what local people think about the following:

How was it done?

The Audit Commission and the DCLG provide detailed instructions to local councils to make sure the Place Survey is carried out in the same way across the country. The survey took place between the beginning of October 2008 and mid-January 2009. Questionnaires were sent to a random sample of 4500 people living in Plymouth. We needed 1100 completed questionnaires to be returned to make sure the results adequately represented the views of local people. In total, 1235 questionnaires were returned. Information from these questionnaires was used to write the report which you can find in below:

What will the results be used for?

We and our partners - including health, police, fire and rescue service - will use information from the survey to review and develop services. In this way we will be listening to the views of local people and using them to directly influence local decision-making and services.
