Understanding Hidden Harm (HHA)

The Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board (PSCB) offers a range of up-to-date statutory training in areas of Best Practice concerning Safeguarding Children and Child Protection. All courses are inter-agency, offering participants the opportunity to meet practitioners and managers from a variety of agencies, to better understand the essential inter-agency nature of all child protection work in Plymouth.

The course Understanding Child Protection (CPF), is the gateway course to all PSCB training and learning opportunities. Once completed, successful participants can access all other PSCB courses including Understanding Hidden Harm (HHA).

Understanding Hidden Harm (HHA) is a one-day course, offering up-to-date research and best practice guidelines for the recognition of signs and symptoms of hidden harm to children caused by alcohol, drugs and substance misuse in the family. Practical guidelines for intervention, support and prevention will be considered, including the identification and analysis of risk with substance using parents.

The training will enable staff to identify instances where parents or guardians, because of their misuse of alcohol or substances, are putting a child at risk otherwise known as 'Hidden Harm'.

Following the training multi-agency staff will feel confident and able to identify and intervene in cases where Hidden Harm may be present in a family putting children at risk. A further two day course at a specialist level is available for successful participants, offering more in-depth understanding of diagnosis and interventions.
