As a city we want to reduce the number of cars on the road.
Ensure traffic growth does not exceed a total of 4.2 per cent (2004 to 2010) from a baseline of 1,118 million kilometres in 2004.
This target is on track.
Vehicle mileage on Plymouth’s roads has fallen steadily since 2006, a reduction that is favourably below the target level for 2010 of 1,085 million vehicle kilometres. In 2010 numbers fell by approximately 2.5 per cent compared to the previous year. This reduction is reflected in both regional and national figures as a combination of economic conditions and increasing oil prices is limiting demand for car travel. It also reflects the positive choice that people are making to use alternative forms of transport, and leading to increased bus use in Plymouth.

Plymouth Transport and Highways through Plymouth's Third Local Transport Plan (2011 to 2026) will seek to provide a balanced, realistic approach to all transport modes and details how they will contribute to the objectives and ambitions of the city.
