Wildlife and planning
We have a duty to conserve biodiversity (the variety of life on earth) in exercising its functions under the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act (NERC Act 2006). Planning Services provides strategic and case by case nature conservation advice in order to protect and enhance Plymouth's biodiversity and geodiversity. Nature conservation guidelines for large scale development are outlined in our sustainable design document whilst guidelines for small scale development are outlined in our development guidelines. See our protecting nature page for more information on legislation and planning policy.
We are currently involved in three exciting partnerships to enhance access to and the functionality of natural spaces within the city and beyond:
- The Tamar Estuaries Consultative Forum (TECF) provides the means for delivery of integrated management of the European Marine Site.
- The Green Infrastructure Project aims to ensure that the natural environment is fully integrated into the development of the city on a strategic level.
- The Stepping Stones to Nature Project will, through public consultation, enhance access to and infrastructure within areas of greenspace.
