Winter maintenance

Plymouth has a relatively mild winter climate compared to more northern parts of the country but this brings its own problems. The temperatures often hover around the freezing point and this can make it more difficult to predict conditions on the road.

The Met Office helps us to monitor changes in weather and ensure that we take action where necessary to minimise danger. A duty officer is on call 24 hours a day throughout the winter (1 October to 30 April) to review the latest information and plan the timing and extent of any action.

Extended periods of wet weather with below freezing temperatures will inevitably lead to an increase in the occurrence of potholes. These become more apparent once the weather starts to settle, so we have dedicated teams ready to carry out temporary repairs to the roads to keep them safe until a more permanent repair can be done.

Devon's motorways and trunk roads are maintained by the Highways Agency.
