Computer access in your library
Access to computers including high speed internet is available in libraries throughout the city. Computers are free to use for library members, there is a small charge for visitors.
Using library computers
Anyone can use the computers in our libraries. You do not need to be a library member although to have full access to the internet you will need to join the library and agree to our Acceptable Use Policy below.
You will also need a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Ask in your library or email library@plymouth.gov.uk.
We limit the amount of time you can use the computers each day so that everyone can use them. If you are aged 15 or over you can have up to two hours a day. If you are aged 14 or under you can have up to one hour a day.
Internet only membership
If you want to use the internet in our libraries but you do not want to borrow anything, you can join as an internet only member. We will need to see one form of identification and you will need to agree to our acceptable use policy.
Visitors
If you are just visiting the city and need to use a computer, library staff are able to log on for you using a visitors ticket. You will be asked to provide your name and address.
Access for visitors costs:
- 15 minutes and two prints - £1
- 30 minutes and five prints - £2
- 60 minutes and five prints - £3
- 120 minutes and five prints - £5
Young people
We actively encourage young people to use our internet services. Young people aged under fifteen need to get the written agreement from their parent or carer first. We have a simple form for them to use.
Filtering
We aim to filter out sites which are not appropriate for viewing in a public library environment.
If you think we have filtered an appropriate site, or should filter an inappropriate site, please fill in a Filtering Suggestion form available from library staff or email cyberlibrary@plymouth.gov.uk.
If you are concerned about accidentally finding inappropriate sites, we recommend that you use those which we have reviewed on the cyberLibrary.
cyberLibrary
The cyberLibrary contains links to hundreds of websites reviewed and evaluated by library staff.
Booking
We offer a booking service in all libraries to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to use the facilities.
To book a computer please contact your local library.
We offer access to web based email such as Gmail or YahooMail. More web based email providers can be found on the cyberLibrary.
Staff help
Staff can help you to get started.
The cyberLibrary has links to online guides that will help you get started.
We run occasional drop in sessions where staff are available to give extra help and advice. Keep an eye out for posters in your library or visit the library what's on page.
Accessibility
All our computers allow you to adjust the size of the text on the screen.
Each library has at least one height adjustable desk and trackball mice are available in all libraries.
