The University of Plymouth’s Faculty of Arts, Plymouth College of Art and Design, City College Plymouth and the College of St Mark and St John offer various courses within the creative industries sector including 3-D Design, Fine Art, Design and Print, Graphic Design, Photography, Spatial, Digital Media, Fashion and Textiles, Performing Arts and Technical Theatre and Production.

i-DAT (Institute of Digital Art and Technology), is based in the School of Computing Communications and Electronics at the University of Plymouth, encompassing undergraduate, graduate and research programmes, alongside a range of regional, national and international cultural projects.

In 2007, Arts degree courses studied at the University’s Exeter and Exmouth campuses are moving to a prestigious new arts complex on the main Plymouth campus at Rowe Street which will include a new state-of-the-art building, designed by internationally-acclaimed architects, Henning Larsen, as part of a ‘cultural quarter’ planned by the University.

Centres of Excellence

Innovate is one of the University of Plymouth's Centres of Expertise, working in the creative industries regionally, nationally and internationally. The centre supports the development of the creative industries, and works with private, public and community sectors to maximise research opportunities, ideas exchange, technology transfer and business partnerships.

Culture South West

Culture South West is one of the eight regional consortiums established by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in 1999 whose role is to help improve the quality and range of cultural activity available to those living in or visiting the south west region and support the further development of its creative industries.

Last Friday

Last Friday is an informal get-together held once a month for Plymouth's creatives.

Peninsula Arts

Peninsula Arts has emerged from within the University of Plymouth's Faculty of Arts which is developing an extensive programme of Public programmes, lectures and related events designed to highlight both the best that the region has to offer as well as bringing to Plymouth a wide range of National and International figures. Run and administered by the Faculty of Arts, it acts as an umbrella organisation to co-ordinate cultural events run and supported by the University.

Plymouth Media Partnership

Plymouth Media Partnership is one of four groups across the South West region supporting and promoting companies and individuals working in traditional and new media.

Its objective is to develop a networking forum to foster and develop links and commercial partnerships amongst creative industries in and around the greater Plymouth area. It supports a broad range of sectors including television, film and radio, facilities houses, interactive media, animation, website design, marketing design and music composers.

One of the initiatives organised and administered by Plymouth Media Partnership is the Media Innovation Awards which celebrate the innovative use of screen-based media across the south west. This prestigious annual event rewards excellence across a range of disciplines and raises the profile of the sector across the region and beyond. South West Screen

South West Screen is the film, television and digital media agency for the south west of England committed to developing a vibrant, dynamic and constantly-evolving screen culture throughout the region. Its main areas of work are business development, locations, screenwriting, exhibitions, training, education and funding.

Submerge

Submerge provides links with the education sector and industry to stem ‘brain drain’ from the area and aims to:

  • sustain and develop the digital content sector and skills in the South West by supporting the emerging talent from Higher Education Institutes through the provision of training, seminars and skills development.
  • develop and strengthen effective partnership links between industry and academia.
  • raise the creative profile of the region, both nationally and internationally, with a view to retaining graduates in the South West.
