Electoral register

The register is a list of everyone who is entitled to vote within the City of Plymouth. The register is used at all local and national elections, and referendums. It is, therefore, important that all eligible persons are included in it otherwise they will not be able to vote at any type of election or referendum.

The annual register was published 1 December 2011. There are two types of register each year - the full register and the edited register.

The full register

This lists everyone who is entitled to vote. You can check it by calling at the council offices or at the Plymouth Library Service. Only certain people and organisations can have copies of the full register, and they can only use it for specified purposes. These include electoral purposes, the prevention and detection of crime and checking your identity when you have applied for credit. The law says who can have a copy of the full register and what they can use it for. The full list of such persons and purposes is given in the Representation of the People (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2002. It is a criminal offence for them to pass it on to anyone else or to use it for any other purpose.

The edited register

This leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked to be excluded from that version of the register. The edited register can be bought by anyone who asked for a copy and they may use it for any purpose.

The full and edited registers are not compiled in name order. Each register is broken down into polling areas, with the names listed by alphabetical street order.

If you need to register to vote see our register to vote page.

The next electoral register will be published on 16 October 2012.

Voter Registration Forms have been posted to all households to update the new register. If you have not received a form or you require another one please contact the Electoral Registration Service or download a form from our registration form page and return as soon as possible.

Please note that the Electoral Registration Service only deals with electoral matters. Any matter concerning credit must be taken up with the appropriate credit reference agency.
