Health investment

Health is an important factor in delivering community well-being and we support a programme to improve the healthcare facilities in the city.

Core Strategy Target 15.2

Delivery of new investment in healthcare infrastructure.

This target is on track.

The Plymouth Primary Care Trust is progressing with projects to improve Plymouth’s primary health care facilities.

New Primary Care Centres have opened at:

  • Ernesettle (2005)
  • Mount Gould (2006)
  • Cattedown (2008)

The Peninsula Dental School facilities have opened at:

  • Devonport (2009)
  • Derriford (2011)

New Primary Care Centres are planned for Millbay, Derriford, Morley Park (Plymstock Quarry) and Sherford.

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is proposing a number of improvements to Derriford Hospital. These include a new multi-storey car park, refurbishment of operating theatres, relocation of the haemodialysis unit, and relocation of eye services from the Royal Eye Infirmary to Derriford.

The redevelopment of the hospital’s main entrance is also being investigated to provide improved Children’s Hospital facilities and improved Urgent Care Pathway (Accident and Emergency) facilities.

Sustainability appraisal

The Sustainability Appraisal of the LDF had the following health objectives:

  • Improve health (both physical and mental)
  • Reduce health inequalities (between neighbourhoods)
  • Promote and support healthy lifestyles (encouraging walking, cycling and active lifestyles)

Two other targets tie in with these health objectives and add to our understanding of how the city’s health and well-being is improving. These are

  • The gap in life expectancy to be less than 2.64 years between the fifth of the city with the lowest life expectancy and the city as a whole.
At the moment the gap is 3.4 years so this target has not been met.
  • Percentage of adult population (16 to 74) participating in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity once a week to be no less than 41.7 per cent in 2010 to 2011.
In September 2010, performance was 43.6 per cent so this target has been met.

This page of the annual monitoring report was last updated December 2011.
