City market

Welcome to Plymouth’s city market. Find out about the city market with over 100 stalls, the fantastic farmer's market, and even renting a stall of your very own. Enjoy a traditional shopping experience and a taste of Plymouth.

The Plymouth City Council and Market Trader’s Association hope that shoppers have an enjoyable visit to the city market. We aim to make your visit interesting, exciting and worthwhile. We offer you:

  • the highest level of customer care at all times
  • expert advice from our friendly and helpful staff
  • quality, value for money and choice
  • compliance with food safety and sale of goods legislation
  • a fair and courteous complaints procedure

The main market hall is over three quarters of an acre clear floor space, and uninterrupted by any supporting pillars. The shell-shaped concrete roof is 57ft above the market floor, and the high windows at the north and south ends make the market hall generally light and airy and cool in the summer. There are ladies, gentlemen’s and disabled public toilets and a baby feeding and changing area.

The day to day cleaning of the market is currently the responsibility of the Direct Labour Organisation (DLO).

The cleaning specifically relates to the British Institute of Cleaning Science National specification for this particular type of building usage. This involves; daily cleaning, mechanical floor scrubbing and hygienic toilet cleans throughout the working day. There are teams available throughout the day to deal with/contain spillages.

It is part of the market attendant's responsibilities for the collection and recycling of trade waste throughout the day in accordance with Plymouth City Council's policy on recyclables.

For further details, please contact the city market office.
