Social inclusion and community cohesion
Our role in the council
The Social Inclusion Unit is responsible for leading on all equalities, diversity and community cohesion issues relating to Plymouth City Council and the citizens of Plymouth. We also deliver the same regarding community safety and welfare benefit, tax credit, debt and money advice.
The unit has specific responsibilities and expertise in relation to the six equality strands of:
- age
- faith and belief
- disability
- gender
- race
- sexual orientation
We make sure services are delivered with all communities in mind. By working with officers throughout the Council, the Social Inclusion Unit is the support unit that advises on cultural and organisational change both internally and externally.
Our vision
“Plymouth City Council is committed to valuing, promoting and celebrating equality, diversity and community cohesion in order to ensure that our residents, employees and visitors enjoy an outstanding quality of life. We are committed to ensuring that people in our multi-cultural city have equal access to high quality services and the right to live, learn and work, free from unlawful discrimination. Our commitment to equalities applies to everything we do in the Council and with our citizens. It is at the core of our work with partners to make Plymouth a vibrant waterfront city of the world.”
Our team
The Social Inclusion Unit works towards making sure that significant social exclusion no longer exists in our multi-cultural city. We will play a major part in meeting the challenge of Plymouth becoming one of Europe’s most vibrant waterfront cities where everyone enjoys an outstanding quality of life.
We will support the Council to represent everyone regardless of their ethnic or cultural background. To enable us to do this, we will forge more links with communities to help the Council to improve services, celebrate diversity and make Plymouth a great place to live.
