Council and democracy
Plymouth City Council is led by 57 councillors serving 20 electoral wards. Elections to the Council are held for three years out of each four, with elections for one third of Council seats being held each year.
City councillors make policies and take decisions that affect the people of Plymouth and decide how the Council's budget should be spent. Many detailed decisions are delegated to individual portfolio holders, Cabinet members and committees. We have a duty to explain to local residents how we spend their money and how well we're providing services, as well as ensure that they can find out who's making decisions and why.
There is a full calendar of committee meetings in this section, with reports, agendas and minutes, together with details of all decisions taken. There are also detailed profiles of all our councillors and their responsibilities.
You will find information about elections and our electoral services as well as the Council’s constitution, policies, performance and decision-making processes.
Our annual Statement of Accounts is available to download, along with other statutory plans and policies including our Best Value Performance Plan. There is also guidance on the Freedom of Information Act and your right to access information held by us.
