Plymouth Warm Zone coming October 2008
The Plymouth Warm Zone aims to help people who have difficulty paying their heating bills by providing energy advice and energy efficiency improvements for their home. The scheme will launch in October.
The warm zone will work by involving local volunteers, community groups and others to identify ‘fuel poor’ households. These are people who need to spend more than 10 per cent of their income on energy bills. We hope that people who are trusted in the local community will be more likely to succeed in reaching people who need assistance and to encourage them to take up energy efficiency grants.
Who's knocking on your door?
We have received complaints from people living in Plymouth who have had people knocking on the door who claim to be working ‘with’ or ‘for’ the council. They offer insulation – loft and cavity wall. Plymouth City Council is working with only one insulation company who are knocking on doors – Miller Pattison. If someone knocks on your door and is offering insulation ask them if they are working for Miller Pattison. Other insulation companies are door-knocking in the city and may offer a good service and product – they are just not endorsed by the council.
Miller Pattison are based at Ivybridge and provide quality insulation and workmanship on the Insulate Plymouth and Plymouth Healthy Homes scheme.
Act On CO2
We encourage everyone to Act On CO2 – reduce your carbon dioxide emissions and reduce your energy bills at home and in the car. To find out how you could Act On CO2 telephone 0800 512012 or go to the Act On CO2 website.
In a nutshell there are three stages to save energy at home and reduce your CO2 emissions:
- Behaviour – things that cost no money, such as drawing the curtains at dusk, putting lids on saucepans, only boiling enough water for the cups of tea you need. Visit our energy saving tips page for more information
- Improve the energy efficiency of your home – stop wasting energy through roof, walls, windows and doors by providing insulation, draught proofing, heating controls and more efficient heating systems. Visit our insulation and heating pages for more information
- Produce energy at home – install a solar hot water system, biomass heating system, ground-source heat pump or other technology that will produce energy in your home – and reduce your dependence on gas and electricity from the grid. Visit our renewable energy page for more information
In addition, you can ensure you are getting the best deal from energy companies, and are paying no more than you need to. Visit our energy facts and figures page for more information.

Energy Performance Certificates for rented homes
Properties re-let from October 2008 will require an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
