Key benefits of transfer

Plymouth City Council believes that the main benefits of transfer for tenants and leaseholders would be:

  • ownership of the homes by a new, local, not for profit housing organisation
  • making sure all homes are brought up to the Government's decent homes standard and maintained at or above that level
  • providing warmer, safer and more comfortable homes that are fit for modern life
  • more action to tackle anti-social behaviour
  • improved services to elderly, disabled and vulnerable tenants
  • a better quality, more efficient repairs service
  • environmental improvements to make local neighbourhoods cleaner, tidier and more attractive
  • increased tenant involvement opportunities and a direct say in running the service with four tenant members on the board of the new landlord organisation

If tenants vote to stay with Plymouth City Council, things cannot stay the same. This is because due to current government policy on local authority finance, the Council does not have access to enough money to improve and maintain its homes. Instead, the Council expects it would have to make savings and this could include reducing the housing service it currently offers tenants and leaseholders.
