Leisure and tourism

Plymouth nestles in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with the Dartmoor National Park to the north, the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound to the south and the rivers Plym and Tamar on either side.

Its rich history and maritime heritage combine the advantages of city living with the benefits of having the countryside and coastline of Devon and Cornwall on its doorstep.

We are committed to providing a wide range of cultural and leisure activities to help people make the most of the city and its surroundings in their time out.

We’re proud to host a number of high profile events - including the British Fireworks Championships and World Championship Class 1 Powerboat Racing - as well as smaller, locally based events and festivals.

From scuba diving in the Sound to taking a stroll through the woods there are sports and recreation opportunities for everyone.

On these pages you will find information on lots of leisure activities on offer in Plymouth, from sports clubs and outdoor education to live music and eating out.

Our What’s On pages let you know what’s happening over the coming months and there are links to all our main visitor attractions, including Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Plymouth Dome and the National Marine Aquarium.

There is an online directory of sports clubs across the city, covering everything from ski slopes to health clubs.

There is also a section on our libraries, with an A to Z of services and an online cyberlibrary.
