Infection prevention and control
The following information is provided by the Council’s Adult Social Care Commissioning team and the NHS Plymouth Infection Prevention and Control team (IPCT) to offer support to the care home sector about infection prevention and control.
The Health and Social Care Act replaced The Care Standards Act 2000 from 1 October 2010. All care homes must comply with the requirements of outcome eight, regulation twelve with regards to cleanliness and infection control, and information provided on this page will include events and training materials to help care homes to comply.
Training
The Infection Prevention and Control Team, in partnership with The Health Protection Agency are running a rolling programme of infection prevention and control training. The sessions cover basic standard infection prevention and control precautions and those who attend should then be able to feedback information to their colleagues. These sessions are certificated and free to attend. If you would like more information about training please contact the the Infection Prevention and Control Team on 01752 434165.
Link group
We also have an Infection Prevention and Control Community Link group. The purpose of the group is for senior members of staff from care homes and with an interest in infection prevention and control to attend quarterly meetings and feedback information to their work colleagues, either during team meetings or by providing training sessions. Additionally the link worker is expected to maintain a resource folder for all staff to access. The Link group is also free to attend.
Study day
A study day is held every year in partnership with NHS Plymouth infection control link practitioners where, through a programme of presentations and group sessions, staff are updated in recent developments in infection prevention and control.
The Infection Prevention and Control Team work closely with the Health Protection Agency during outbreaks of infections in care homes and will contact you to offer support and also to assist in environmental audits following outbreaks if it is appropriate.
