Priority sectors

The Local Economic Strategy (LES) identifies six priority sectors for growth:

  • Advanced engineering
  • Business services
  • Creative industries
  • Marine industries
  • Medical and healthcare
  • Tourism and leisure

Medical and healthcare, marine industries and business services were the largest priority sector employers in Plymouth in 2010. They made up almost a quarter of the city’s workforce. Employment in the marine industries sector in Plymouth is far greater relatively than the national average.

Employee numbers fell in most of the priority sectors between 2009 and 2010. The creative industries sector which had shown growth in the previous year, lost over 300 employees in 2009 to 2010 (-14per cent of that sector). Business services continued to shed jobs with almost 400 losses (-6 per cent); however this was less than in the previous year when 1,100 jobs were lost.

Tourism and leisure was the only priority sector to show significant growth with a net increase of 400 employees (+12 per cent).

This page of the annual monitoring report was updated December 2011.
