Laira Battery Quarry Devon County Geological Site
OS Sheets: 1:50k 201 1:10k SX55 NW, GS Sheet 1:50k 349
This small disused quarry is a Devon County Geological Site and is located on the south side of Military Road, west of Laira Battery. This site has the best and most accessible exposure of 'Weard Sandstone' which is a distinct formation within the Upper Devonian slate succession. This formation is unique to Plymouth and suggests association with volcanic activity.
The site suffers from dumped rubbish and care should be taken, particularly around glass and scrap metal. There are regular bus services in and around Plymouth to the site, while there is limited parking for cars and minibuses outside Laira Battery and further up Military Road.
See below for more detailed information from Devon County Council:
If you have visited the site please send in your photographs and we will put the best on this site.
