Alzheimer’s Awareness 2006

This partnership project saw our community and outreach staff plus staff and volunteers from the Plymouth and District branch of the Alzheimer’s Society spend a week at Oakdale, Riverview and Lakeside residential centres, all of which specialise in caring for people living with dementia.

During this time, residents took part in specially devised reminiscence activities using toys and other resources from the Museum.

Some of the work produced as part of these activities was then displayed at the Museum in a special exhibition called “Me and My Memory: Alzheimer’s Awareness 2006” (July 2006).

There are currently over 750,000 people living with dementia in the UK. As a result, the exhibition also featured general information about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and the opening coincided with national Alzheimer’s Awareness Week 2006.

Following the end of the project, our outreach team continue to visit Oakdale, Riverview and Lakeside to conduct further reminiscence sessions.
