Applying for an exhibition
The Exhibitions Team at the Museum is responsible for the selection and development of temporary exhibitions. The Museum has two galleries for temporary shows, the North Gallery and the Hurdle Gallery, totalling approximately 300 square metres of floor space between them. From large national touring exhibitions to smaller local interest shows, we aim to provide something for everyone, and to compliment the collections that the Museum holds.
If you would like to know more about why and how we choose exhibitions, please download our Exhibitions Policy.
How to apply
If you are interested in applying to hold an exhibition at the Museum, you will need to submit a proposal which outlines clearly and concisely how your project would compliment our Exhibitions Policy. Your proposal should also include:
- Project title
- Costs (including details of any funding applications)
- Dates (or if touring, available dates)
- Space required
(North Gallery is approx 200sq m, Hurdle Gallery is approx 100sq m) - Main partners
- Content outline (including explanation of how you think your proposal matches up to our policy)
- Anticipated audience
- Ideas for learning/event opportunities
- Contact details
Completed proposals should be emailed to exhibitions@plymouth.gov.uk, or posted to the museum, marked for the attention of the Exhibitions Team.
Please do not send valuable/irreplaceable items in support of your application. If you wish your proposal pack to be returned to you, please enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope. Please be aware that we work at least one year in advance of the programme, and usually programme three years ahead.
Proposals received are logged and reviewed at the next of our selection meetings. Proposals that are felt to be the strongest and most relevant to the Museum and its audiences are then put to the Museum Management Team for approval. Once approved, successful proposals are timetabled into the programme and the applicants notified. We also notify the unsuccessful applicants by letter where possible.
