What we have been working on in 2011...
As part of the Plymouth Pictured and City Through a Lens projects, four BA Media Arts students at the University of Plymouth worked with Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, South West Film Television Archive, Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, a professional film maker and the BBC. The challenge was to produce four films that could be used by the museum's Learning Team, for primary aged children. The students were given access to archival material about Plymouth, and were asked to produce a film using a mix of archival and new footage.
Each student produced a short film based on one of the following themes: Home and community, Building the city, Sea and seaside, and Transport. You can see the results of their hard work by visiting our Plymouth Pictured: A City Through a Lens website!
This is what our Young Explainers 2009 to 2010 have said:
"In 2009 the focus of our work was the ‘Sir Joshua Reynolds - The Acquisition of Genius’ exhibition. This was the largest exhibition at the museum for 15 years and a topic close to the heart of the community as Reynolds was a local. Our intention was to promote the exhibition in ways that would encourage the interest of a wider, and in particular, younger audience. We devised projects to bring the exhibition off the museum walls and out into the public sphere. During this project we built strong links between the university, the museum and the public.
Our experience with the museum has not only informed us of the broader aspects of art education and curation, but also brought the volunteers together from a disparate group to a hardworking, close-knit team. Our opportunity to contribute to this high profile exhibition within Plymouth has been invaluable and the programme has been mutually beneficial and exciting for both the students and university and the wider city community."
