Orienteering
There are qualifications for staff who wish to lead orienteering. Although these are recommended they are not mandatory as anyone with a moorland leadership capability who has experience of orienteering can deliver this activity with an appropriate plan. For full details of safety and coaching guidance visit the British Orienteering Federation website.
Any leader needs to be suitably competent and at the level they wish to lead as well as to be able to manage the group size in the selected location. As there are circumstances where desirably young people could be working independently then leaders and all staff in attendance will need to be able to operate to the remote supervision principles such as:
- knowledge of the group and a level of trust
- group members aware of how to deal with disputes and emergencies
- boundaries and communications
It may well also be of use to consider the National Navigation Awards Scheme.
