Paying business rates
By direct debit
Direct debit is the easiest and most convenient way to pay your business rates. The advantages for you include:
- saving of time, for example, no waiting in queues, no writing or posting of cheques
- no worries about forgetting to pay
- no need to carry large amounts of cash
- no need to update payment instructions whenever changes happen
- money back guarantee (see the direct debit guarantee below)
The direct debit guarantee:
- all banks and building societies that take part in the direct debit scheme offer this guarantee
- if the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, you will be told of this in advance by at least 10 working days as agreed
- if Plymouth City Council, your bank or building society makes an error, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid
- you can cancel a direct debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society
- if you do cancel the direct debit with your bank or building society please send a copy of this letter to the business section of Plymouth City Council
If you would like to start paying your business rates by direct debit, you can download a direct debit mandate from the documents table below.
Complete the details and return it to: Cashiers Section, Exchequers Division Finance Department Plymouth City Council, Civic Centre, Armada Way, Plymouth, PL1 2AA.
Alternatively telephone us on 01752 304966 and we will send you a direct debit instruction form. Complete the form and send it to the address above.
Paying in person
You can call at the Civic Centre, Royal Parade, Plymouth or at any housing branch office. Branch offices are at Devonport, Efford, Ernesettle, Estover, Honicknowle, North Prospect, Southway and Whitleigh. You can now pay at the Civic Centre or the housing branch office using a debit or credit card.
On our website
You can make an online payment using Visa, Mastercard, Solo and Switch on this website. We do not accept American Express.
By post
You can send cheques and postal orders (not cash) to us at: Business Rates Section, City Treasury, Civic Centre, Armada Way' Plymouth' PL1 2AA.
Please make cheques and postal orders payable to Plymouth City Council and remember write your account number on the back.
Please note: we will not accept post dated cheques and please do not send cash.
At a bank
You can pay through your bank but they may charge you for this service. If you pay through your bank, you must pay the money in to your bank at least 10 working days before the instalment date is due.

By phone
You can pay using Visa, Mastercard, and Switch cards. If you are making a payment you can call 24 hours a day on 01752 262243. We do not accept American Express.
Remember have your account number and card number ready when you call.
Please note: If you do not make your payments on time, we will send you a reminder or final notice shortly after the due date.
