Transport

Explore all aspects of transport and travel across the city through the images, documents and film clips presented here. Journey on trains, planes, trams, coaches, horses, boats and bikes around the familiar – and not so familiar – highways and waterways of Plymouth.

The collections illustrate narrow, turn-of-the-century streets filled with horses, coaches and pedestrians. Time moves on and the scene shifts to horse-drawn and then electric trams, competing with buses and early motor cars and bustling pavements.

The green and blue city we know today would not be complete without a representation of water craft large and small. Pleasure boats, water taxis, rowing boats and the navy form an integral part of the collections shown here.
