A man posting a vote

Promotion and participation

Voting matters - we can all make a difference in our communities and day-to-day lives. The council provides a wide range of services to the people of Plymouth. We all have the power to influence and if you do not vote you lose this power. Here are services your council provide and reasons why you should vote:

  • Welfare and support - we develop and deliver a wide range of services to support vulnerable children and adults in their own homes or in residential care.
  • House, home and neighbourhood - we provide a source of help with accommodation for many. Through its community development programme, your council is working to create safer, more prosperous and better neighbourhoods for all.
  • Roads and pavements - we are responsible for maintaining local roads and highways.
  • Local environment - we are responsible for emptying the bins and for keeping our streets, parks and gardens clean.
  • Education - we are responsible for supporting local schools and creating learning opportunities for everyone.
  • Sports and leisure - we run a wide range of sports and leisure facilities.
  • Local economy - we are the biggest provider of services in the city. One of our key tasks is to support local businesses and bring prosperity to our city. We do this through our economic development policies.
  • City's future - we manage the local plan, the 'blue-print' for how our city develops in terms of housing, green belt and commercial land use.
  • Council tax - we are responsible for agreeing how much money needs to be spent on delivering local services and for working out how much of this money will have to be raised locally through council tax.
  • Your views and your vote - the council is made up of individuals who have been formally elected by you to represent your needs and interests.

If you are interested in what goes on in your town, your street or your home, then make council business your business. You can get involved by using your vote.

From time to time the Electoral Services unit will undertake activities to help the process of election participation through awareness campaigns.
