Training courses
We offer training to all agencies with responsibilities towards children including a gateway course 'Understanding Child Protection' consisting of:
- Definitions of abuse
- Signs and symptoms of child abuse
- Current Plymouth procedures following concern about a child
- The inter-agency approach to safeguarding
Attendance at this one day course ensures a strong knowledge base to progress to our specialist courses on safeguarding and child protection.
Our training brings together:
- Lessons from investigations into the unexpected death or significant harm of a child or young person
- Research into child and family experiences, locally, nationally and internationally
- Government proposals for development of policy, strategies and procedures
- Best practice guidelines, and current experiences of local lead agencies
Local Safeguarding Children Boards are required to ensure the distribution of up to date best practice to all agencies. Our training is therefore:
- Formal, structured higher level learning, including lectures, reading texts, comparative theories, and learning audits
- Facilitated by lead professionals working in the field, specially trained by Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board (PSCB) to deliver informed and detailed learning
- Multi-agency, bringing together core workers from at least six different agencies onto each course to ensure a culture of networking and sharing
- Certificated and accredited, as the lead agency for Safeguarding in Plymouth
PSCB learning and training events encourage reading, professional study and analytical thinking.
Please see the 'Guiding Principles of Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board' document in advance of attendance. This is available to download from the documents table below. Individual courses are also detailed below.
Please use the application form available below where possible, or email safeguardingtraining@plymouth.gov.uk.
Please note: your agency may require a manager to approve attendance. If you are applying for this training as part of your employment with either Health or Police services, you must apply through your training department only.
