A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PLYMOUTH SCOTT 100 PLANNING COMMITTEE
We are on the countdown now to a great weekend and we hope to welcome many of you to Plymouth in June. It will be a unique occasion. We have used the 100th anniversary of Scott's last birthday to assemble an outstanding programme of science, history and culture. It will be of interest, not just to Polar enthusiasts, but to others anxious to learn more about the man, his followers and competitors who inspired millions with their stories of endurance, achievement and tragedy.
Antarctica, 5 to 6 million square miles of desolate wilderness, remains one of the most fascinating and important regions on the planet. Learn more about both its science, past and present, and the heroic adventures and personalities it inspired. What are the medical problems explorers past and present encounter? How do our bodies react to extreme cold? What is Scott's legacy?
Some of the greatest tales of human endeavour will be revisited by historians and members of the International Scott Centenary Expedition who are following in their footsteps. Learn more about each member of Scott's polar party. Newly available archive film footage will be shown. We will hear from Jules Evans, the grandson of 'Teddy' Evans, Scott's second in command, the results of the unique musical experiment he has just conducted in Antarctica. Meet other descendents of Scott's expedition and polar enthusiasts from around the world. Browse the stalls and stands in the extensive exhibition area. Buy polar books and mementoes.
Scientists who are working on the bases of the British Antarctic Survey will be at the conference to demonstrate and discuss their work with visitors. Book in for Jenny Coverack's acclaimed performance of the play inspired by Scott's widow, 'A Father for my Son'. Stay on for the Anniversary itself on Monday and register for the lecture programme being held by the world leader in ocean science, Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Join one of the tours of Britain's most important naval base, visit the national Scott Memorial and Scott's birthplace and spend time in this great historic city with a proud maritime heritage.
All this, and much more, is assembled for your entertainment, interest and education in a unique one-off occasion. Do not miss out! Book now while places remain available!
