Town and city visits
Even when a visit is planned to a local venue it may still be important to have been and checked out the facilities beforehand. This will make the supervisors aware of any building, road improvements or closures of areas or buildings. It will be worth planning the route carefully if longer walks are contemplated and or lunch is to be taken somewhere outside to find somewhere suitable undercover.
There is always a possibility that there may be other events taking place at the same time that will impact on congestion and complicate the task of supervising a group. Resources may also be under considerable pressure such as coach setting down points.
It may be acceptable to consider that a public building is a safe venue but it may not have the space if several groups arrive at the same time. There are more likely to be issues over the use of public toilets in a city centre environment and of course it also likely that there will be a wide cross section of the public and potential unwanted attention from some to plan a contingency for.
Further details including risk management implications can be found on the documents page entitled remote supervision in an urban environment.
