West End Public Art
The West End Public Art scheme enables and encourages culture to grow from within, furthermore it aims to nurture creative activity through subtle art interventions. We recognise the unique ability that artists have in responding to 'place' in the fullest sense - physical, social and human.
An important focus of our vision, Reawakening the West End, is to create more of the independent trading community that currently underpins the character of the area. The immediate projects seek to assist in supporting and creating a new confidence for businesses in the West End.
The area is an honest, functional place, where families go shopping. It is an area of diversity, it is inclusive, it is vibrant and it has some 200 independent traders located in and around the Plymouth City (Pannier) Market.
The Plymouth Market is seen as the engine room of the West End with capacity for cultural/civic activity, offering higher quality produce and more of a food based offer.
Plymouth City Centre Company manages the city centre on behalf of its 600 businesses who voted for the establishment of a Business Improvement District in 2005. The BID aims to make the city centre cleaner, safer, more attractive and better promoted.
The City Centre Management Team who are accountable to the City Centre Company's Board of Directors already organise a variety of events and activities in the West End and the city centre. The Company is committed to raising the profile of the West End, through support of a programme of arts, events and other activities.
