UK Youth Parliament

UK Youth Parliament

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) aims to give the young people of the UK, between the age of 11 and 18 a voice, which will be heard and listened to by local and national government, providers of services for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views and needs of young people. UKYP has the support of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Leader of the Liberal Democrats.

The UKYP has a rolling programme. We meet on an annual basis, and give the young people of the UK a chance to express their views and concerns at the highest levels.

The UKYP was launched at the House of Commons in July 1999. Currently, we have over 400 elected Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs), aged between 11 and 18 (inclusive). MYPs represent both young men and women, including young people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, and with physical and learning disabilities.

UK Youth Parliament is run in Plymouth by the Youth Participation Team at the Plymouth City Council and is your chance to have your say and get your voices heard on issues and decisions that affect you.

It was launched in 1999 with the aim to involve more young people in having their say. Throughout England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, young people aged 11 to 18 years vote and elect two MYPs for their area.

The role of your MYP will be to represent you on any issue/decision you feel important.

Every July all the MYPs get together and produce a manifesto of issues that young people think are important and affect them, like education, activities and media, laws, the environment, international issues etc.

The Government reads this document and the MYP then take those issues forward in their city/area.

If you are between 11 to 18, living in the Plymouth area and have an issue you feel is important then you can contact the MYP through the contact details to the left or we can arrange for the MYP to come out to talk to you or your group. Check out the UK Youth Parliament website for more information.
