We want all the places and spaces in Plymouth to be accessible and welcoming to all people, whatever their age. In this section we have focused on a sample of places that have something specifically tailored for older people.
Culture, heritage and arts
The Box: Part museum, gallery and archive the Box provides an age friendly social space. It brings together free historic collections, contemporary exhibitions, activities, tours and special events. Access information with details of the access for visitors with disabilities or mobility issues can be found on the website.
Theatre Royal Plymouth: Shows a range of theatre including classic and contemporary drama, dance and musical productions. The theatre provides an inclusive environment including wheelchair spaces, audio described and British Sign Language performances.
Red Velvet Cinema: A community based cinema for older people that meets every fortnight at Devonport Guildhall for a sub-titled film, refreshments and conversation.
Plymouth Arts Cinema: Screening new and independent cinema. Includes concessions for over 60s, companions and carers and Dementia Friendly screenings.
Real Ideas at Market Hall: Immersive experiences and events in the heart of Devonport. Includes relaxed afternoon Silver Screenings for over 55s.
The Mayflower Museum and Tourist Information Centre: Museum exploring Plymouth’s seafaring history focusing on the Mayflower's 1620 voyage. It is wheelchair accessible with lifts.
Outdoor spaces
Parks: There are 950 hectares of open green spaces in Plymouth with accessible parks and open spaces in all parts of the city. Find a park near you.
Country Wildlife Sites: Areas that are rich in wildlife including meadows and woodland. Not all sites are accessible to the public so please check details
Local Nature Reserves: There are 13 Local Nature Reserves that are free to visit and provide an opportunity to learn about nature and enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of being outdoors in nature.
Saltram: A National Trust property full of treasures, stories and intrigue. A garden with year-round splendour for cyclists and walker. Wheelchair and tramper hire and guides in alternative formats available. Saltram is a dementia friendly site.
Plymouth Sound National Marine Park: The National Marine Park encourages greater connections with the city's marine environment. Includes 100's of free activities on the water and dry land including Seaquest Saturdays, walks and beach cleans.
Libraries
Plymouth has a great network of local libraries that are accessible to everyone. As well as traditional book loans Plymouth libraries operate a home library service and lots of activities and events including craft and chatter and family history sessions, board games clubs and free computer skill courses.
