Why are cockroaches a pest?

Cockroaches carry a range of serious illnesses such as salmonella, dysentery, gastro-enteritis and typhoid. Droppings from cockroaches have been linked with increases in eczema and asthma.

The risks of contracting an illness are particularly high in homes with vulnerable people such as children, the elderly or those fighting existing illnesses. Cockroaches produce a bad odour that taints food and any objects they come into contact with.

Where are they found?

Cockroaches tend to be found in the kitchen or where food is stored. They prefer warm, wet locations with high humidity such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas. They breed rapidly and are very tough.

Early treatment is necessary to make sure an infestation does not become established or spread to neighbouring properties.

German cockroaches scuttle and are very good climbers on smooth surfaces, due to the sticky pads on their feet, If conditions are warm enough they will also fly.

Oriental cockroaches prefer to scuttle but can climb some rough surfaces. They prefer cooler, damper areas such as basements, drains and even survive outdoors on rubbish tips.

How to prevent an infestation

  • Keep buildings in good repair and seal any cracks and crevices in the walls, floor and skirting boards
  • Store food in containers or in strong sealed plastic bags
  • Clean all waste food and liquid spillages
  • Clean food debris from under fridges, cookers and other appliances
  • Clear away used dishes and cutlery after use
  • Remove pet food, water and clean up animal droppings and litter trays at night
  • Use bins with tightly fitting lids
  • Dispose of soiled nappies
  • Do not leave liquid in sinks, baths or buckets overnight
  • Fix plumbing leaks and control moisture levels using a dehumidifier if necessary
