Why are mice a pest?

Mice carry parasites and spread diseases such as salmonellosis and other food poisoning bacteria. They can damage homes and furniture by gnawing through wood and plastic. They have been known to cause fires by chewing through electrical cables.

People are often frightened of mice and there is a stigma of having mice in your property. Mice continually urinate and contaminate work surfaces.

Where are they found?

In houses and other buildings, often moving between individual flats and terraced properties. They can squeeze through holes as small as a pencil and are good climbers. They nest in loft spaces and under floors.

Signs include droppings and gnawing marks. Nests may be found in houses and burrows found in gardens. A colony of mice can reproduce quickly and spread between buildings.

How to prevent an infestation

  • Keep your house in a good condition and structurally sound
  • Repair broken drains and pipework
  • Keep gardens cut back and remove all excess vegetation
  • Ensure all bins have a tight fitting lid
  • Minimise feeding of wild birds in your garden and clean up any spilt food
